Amazon Revamps AWS Data Centers for Generative AI Needs

Amazon is revamping its Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers to enhance their performance, efficiency, and availability. According to Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS’s VP of Infrastructure Services, these updates include streamlining electrical and mechanical designs, which will improve system availability and power delivery to the servers.

In addition to improving the basic functionality of its data centers, Amazon is also preparing for future hardware, such as Nvidia’s upcoming Blackwell chips. To accommodate these chips and Amazon’s own Trainium 2 processors, the company is introducing liquid cooling systems, similar to the cooling systems found in car radiators, to manage the extreme heat generated by these powerful AI servers.

In 2023, AWS generated $90.7 billion in revenue, making it Amazon’s most profitable division. While Amazon’s retail business generated significantly more revenue at $484 billion, AWS’s operating income of $24.6 billion surpassed the retail segment’s income of $12.2 billion. Given AWS’s dominant position as the world’s largest cloud provider, any infrastructure improvements are critical for maintaining its competitive edge, particularly as cloud services are heavily influenced by performance and availability.
